Army Fitness Test (AFT) to Replace ACFT Starting June 1, 2025
The U.S. Army has announced that the Army Fitness Test (AFT) will officially replace the Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT) as the standard physical fitness assessment for all soldiers, effective June 1, 2025.
Key Changes:
Test Components: The AFT will consist of five events:
1. Three-repetition maximum deadlift
2. Hand-release push-up with arm extension
3. Sprint-drag-carry
4. Plank
5. Two-mile run
Notably, the Standing Power Throw has been removed due to concerns about its relevance and fairness.
Scoring Standards:
For soldiers in 21 designated combat military occupational specialties (MOS), the AFT introduces age-normed, sex-neutral standards. These soldiers must achieve a minimum of 60 points per event, with a total minimum score of 350.
The maximum possible score has been adjusted to 500 points, reflecting the removal of one event.
Permanent Profiles:
Soldiers on profile will complete all events not prohibited.
Scoring must average ≥70 points across 4 events (280 total minimum).
A “GO” in alternate aerobic events is required.
Implementation Timeline:
June 1, 2025: The AFT becomes the official test of record for all soldiers.
January 1, 2026: Combat MOS soldiers are required to meet the new standards.
June 1, 2026: Reserve and National Guard soldiers in combat roles must comply with the updated requirements.
Additional Notes:
Soldiers unable to perform certain events due to permanent profiles will be assessed on the events they can complete, with adjusted scoring criteria. Further guidance, including updated scorecards and implementation details, will be released by May 1, 2025.
For more information and updates, soldiers are encouraged to consult official Army communications and their chain of command.
